There was nothing necessary in the used bookshop on Eagle Street
Because people can borrow used books from a library
Or buy new books anywhere
So there’s no necessity for such a place at all
Which is probably why it closed

The theatre on Main Street
Didn’t put on plays every day
And even when they did have shows
The production value was not nearly as professional
As what you can watch on your TV
Or through Netflix
And it cost more to see and was less convenient
So, while it may be gone now
It wasn’t essential, anyway

None of the little mom-and-pop shops in town are
Or, I guess more accurately, were
Since there are so many empty storefronts
Formerly inhabited by interesting shops
That was not required

When the Wal-Mart moved into town
People were excited
Because they now had one place
Where they could buy all their necessities

More parking was necessary
Although now it’s just an abandoned parking lot
Next to an abandoned building
But when they built the new Wal-Mart
More parking was necessary
More parking is always necessary
And we weren’t using those trees anyway

You can get just about everything online
Plenty of shopping on Amazon
And community through social networking
For which Facebook is pretty much a necessity
If you want to keep up-to-date

We have become incredibly efficient
And finally, have everything necessary
And nothing we need.
