Today
I still love you
But I know
Now that you’ve left
The years we had together become much less critical, retroactively
Some less knowledgeable people might think
Love is eternal
But that’s a lie
If a relationship doesn’t last, it isn’t real
It’s tempting to believe
That old Latin sawhorse
“Amor vincit omnia”
Here’s what’s true, though:
The present reaches back and strangles the past
How could we ever hope to know love if
This is the world we live in
Love comes into your life and changes you forever
That’s a fairy tale because
What’s past is past
And I’ll tell you something
Love
Is better than
Nothing
But
It sure ain’t all it’s cracked up to be
This hectic life
We’re out here trying our best
And hey
Whatever gets you through the day
Sometimes, it’s Netflix and takeout
Sometimes, it’s love
Sometimes, it’s just emptying your brain onto a page
But we’ve all got to find something
Amidst the nonsense
To hold onto
I had love
Or so I thought
My luck must be especially unusual
I ask myself
What have I done to deserve this
A life of happiness and love
Gone
All my old miseries
Home again
This feels like
Everything has changed
You changed things
So thanks a bunch for that
Love changes things
It gives us perspective when
We realize even the saddest times can be beautiful
If we read them in the opposite direction
